Sun Allergy


Sun allergy rash is quite uncommon compared to other allergies If you are sensitive to sun or heat you are likely to contract sun allergy. It causes minor irritation but those who are hypersensitive it can lead to blisters and spreads to areas not exposed to sunlight.

Arms and legs are most prone to sun allergy. Babies and infants are very susceptible to sun allergy and this has to be monitored closely.

Sun Stroke: A typical form of sun allergy is known as sun stroke. Prolonged exposure to scorching sunlight may result in losing consciousness. Sometime the condition is also referred to as "sun drunk" as it affects the thinking ability and balance. A short nap of around 30 minutes is a sure cure.

Variations of Sun Allergy Rash:

1.Polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) and
2.Actinic prurigo (hereditary PMLE). PMLE is the commonest and creates rashes and itching
3.Photo allergic eruption. This is caused by chemical reactions between the sun and some products.  This could be makeup, sunscreen lotions, or medication. In case it is caused by medication advice of a doctor should be sought.
4. Solar Articaria. This is the rarest sun allergy and is quite common.

Women are mostly affected by this and the symptoms are itchiness, redness and hives.
